Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Für Elise” provides us with the first example of a minor second, and it can be found in the first “seconds” of the piece — in other words, the first two notes are a descending minor second apart.
One great way to do so without having to ask people for their contact information is through subscribing to your band where they consume music directly. For listening tendencies, this means encouraging them to subscribe on Spotify, YouTube, Apple, Amazon or whatever their favorite streaming site is. If they want to just know when they can see you live again, ask them to subscribe to your tour dates on BandsinTown or Songkick; whichever platform you use to post your shows.
Music creation software follows a few different interface metaphors: the multitrack mixing desk (Pro Tools), the rack of modular synths (Reason), the sheet of staff paper (Sibelius, Dorico, Noteflight). There are also hybrids of all of the above (Logic). Ableton Live is in a category by itself, because it’s organized around a kind of performable spreadsheet. Serato’s metaphor is two turntables, a crate of vinyl records, and a DJ mixer.
All of the notes above Fret 12 on any string are just repetitions of the same notes, an octave above (for example, Fret 14 on the 6th string is an F#, an octave above the same note on Fret 2 on the same string). Therefore, we can simply subtract 12 from the fret number and proceed repeating the same process we have discussed until now.
The Ray Charles project is called Au Palais des Sports-Live and was recorded in 1961 during his first European tour! The Serge Gainsbourg project, Premiers Tubes-Live, is composed of two live-on-radio sets recorded in 1961 and 1962 and contains an exclusive interview with Juliette Gréco, another French icon from that period. And thirdly, Premières Scènes-Live is a recording of Dalida’s first appearances on stage at the renowned Olympia in 1961 and on the radio show Discoparade in 1962.
It’s scary to be vulnerable, but I believe it’s necessary to get to the root of your artistry. Singing your own songs in front of people is one of the most vulnerable things you can do, and embodying what makes your songs and your stories unique will light up your art. Don’t be afraid to make others uncomfortable, because once you start creating art you don’t believe in, simply to please others and their needs, you will lose yourself.
Ke$ha made a smash hit in 2009 with “Tik Tok.” The video went viral and even became a couch gag for The Simpsons. It recounts Ke$ha’s previous night out after waking up in a bathtub and disappointing her family, before going out for a drive and then hitting the clubs again for another round of partying.
This video is also a true masterclass in how to create a dynamic, visual aesthetic that bolsters a song to full effect with just a single dancer and a no-frills location.
Next, I’m raising the white flag at these two choruses. At first I just wanted to label them “title refrains” because there’s different material happening after them, but on the other hand, the second half of the choruses are the same, so you kinda have to go back to chorus over refrain.
